1800-1805 Eagle Pommel Mounted Infantry / Artillery Saber

"John Salter" Hairy Eagle Pommel Style Hilt

An outstanding condition Mounted (Infantry or Artillery) Eagle Pommel Saber by "L. Wells & Co., New York. "L.Wells & Co." was a sword retailer from 1799 to 1807, located in New York. The eagle pommel is the "John Salter" - Hairy Eagle style version. The saber has a curved blade with large single fuller, gilt decorated designs engraved on both sides. Right side with Lady Liberty, arms motifs, and banner "L. WELLS & CO. / NEW YORK / WARRANTED", opposite side features arms motifs and a patriotic eagle. Gilt brass hilt with large solid guard and patriotic knuckle bow featuring American eagle and 13 stars on a stippled background. Ivory grip with fluted grooves and faceted spine. Complete with black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. Very good condition; blade retains traces of blue and generous traces of gilt, otherwise a spotted grey patina. Hilt with some edge wear and scattered marks. Grip with age crack on left side and small chip at pommel on both sides. Scabbard good with some scratches and losses of gilt on mounts. Leather has been repaired and shows flaking, slight separation at lower seam, and crazing. These early sabers are seldom found with their original scabbards. The blade length is 30.5" and the overall length is 36". A wonderful early War of 1812 saber used by mounted infantry or artillery regiments.
