Presented is the Historical Presentation Sword of General Daniel Woodall of the 1st Delaware Infantry. This model is the highest grade Horstmann sword with cavalry length blade and Staff & Field style hilt. The sword has a beautiful engraved silver grip with the bust of Abraham Lincoln depicted. The hilt is regulation style of a very high quality with extra high relief embellishment and engraving. The blade is 34" long and etched with the "W.H. Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia" address along with stand of arms with flags. foliate, arms with federal shield, American Eagle, and "E. Pluribus Unum." The reverse has arms, foliate, and a large "U.S." The iron scabbard has fancy brass mounts with silver inserts engraved with an eagle, federal shield, and "E. Pluribus Unum." The center mount has Lady Liberty with shield and liberty cap and the drag has Lady Justice with sword, scales, and blindfold.

The presentation plaque between the top and middle mounts reads "Presented to / Major (later General) D. Woodall/ of 1st Del. V.I. by the Non-Com. Officers/ and the privates of the Garibaldi Guards, as a/ token of their respect for him as a/ Gentleman and Soldier Oct'r, 1863." General Daniel Woodall enlisted on 9/28/1861 as a Captain and on the same date commissioned into the 1st Delaware Infantry. He was promoted to Major on 12/30/1862, then Lt. Col on 11/5/1863, then Colonel of the Regiment on 12/23/1864, and finally Brig. General by Brevet on 6/15/1865. He mustered out on 7/12/1865.

Captain Woodall was wounded in the arm on September 17, 1862 at the Battle of Sharpsburg. He was also wounded in action by gunshot of left leg at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Again, Woodall was wounded in the right foot by gunshot at the Battle of Spotsylvania on May 10, 1864.

This EXACT same sword is pictured and described in John Thillmann's book "Civil War Army Swords" pages 332 & 333. Overall, a combination of a beautiful high grade presented Civil War sword to a Brevetted General with a wonderful history and war record. Presented swords like this one are getting harder to find.
