A high quality M1850 Staff & Field Officers sword identified to Captain William M. Jordan of the 28th PA Infantry. Captain Jordan enlisted on 6/28/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant and commissioned into Co. B, Pa 28th Infantry on the same date. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on 9/17/1862 and again wounded in action at the Battle of Chancellorsville on 5/5/1863. He was promoted to Captain on 5/1/1862. Captain Jordan resigned on 6/13/1863 due to his multiple injuries received in battle.

The presentation on the top sword mount reads "Capt Wm M. Jordan, 28th Penna Vols, From the Members of a General Court Martial associated with him, April 19th 1863." After further research, the history of this presented sword gets very interesting. Captain Jordan resided over the court martial of Captain William H. Woodward, Co. K, 28th Pa Regiment. Captain Woodward was accused of bringing "ladies of the night" into the 28th Pa Camp on several occasions. He was caught by high command and tried by his peers who as we know benefited from his endeavors. Captain Woodward of course was found "not guilty" and the charges dropped. The members of this court martial (and I presume Capt. Woodward) presented this sword to Capt. Jordan at the end of the trial.

The sword itself is spectacular in every way. I don't like using the word "mint" but that is exactly the condition of the blade. The frosting just pops on this sword with the "Tiffany & Co. New York" address very clear. Everything is intact and tight including all mounts, hilt, and fit into the scabbard. The hilt has the small "U.S." pattern and the grip is made of solid silver as indicated by the Tiffany sterling silver plaque near the top of the scabbard. All mounts, hilt and silver grip are untouched with over 150 years of patina, never cleaned. All original screws and blade washer are present with accompanying sword knot. The blade etchings have military motifs and flag on the obverse and the "U.S." on the reverse. The scabbard mounts are exquisite with an American Eagle & stars on the top mount, floral designs on the middle mount and the "U.S." prominently shown on the drag. On the reverse side of the top mount is the presentation inscription to Capt. Jordan, floral designs on the reverse middle mount, and a beautiful star and stripes scroll in oval pattern on the drag reverse with the "U.S." again on the bottom of the drag. Please view all the provided pictures which does not give justice to the overall condition and beauty of this sword.
